Toaru Hikuushi e no Koiuta Episode 1 Review

Toaru Hikuushi e no Koiuta Ariel AlbusThis New Year has presented us with another jewel from the anime world, Toaru Hikuushi e no Koiuta, an action adventure series with romance that’s looks packed with potential! What I’m expecting from this series: epic dogfight battles, an awesome storyline that makes sense, and eye-catching visuals and from the looks of it I’m pretty sure it’s going to check all the boxes!

As many of you might already know, Toaru Hikuushi e no Koiuta is a spin-off from the anime movie, The Princess and the Pilot (Toaru Hikuushi e no Tsuioku), which also happens to be by the same producer. If you’ve seen the movie you may notice that some stuff in this anime series looks a little related to The Princess and the Pilot but so far it doesn’t seem to be directly connected at this point of time.

Toaru Hikuushi e no KoiutaOkay before we get into the meat of this review I’d like to get this over with first. Why does the main character have the same name as Superman? I mean I don’t know if the producers gave him this name on purpose but if you’re a Superman fan and are watching this, I’d be kinda distracted every time someone mentions his name. Fly Kal-el fly!

Toaru Hikuushi e no Koiuta planesOkay now that’s out of my mind lets get serious. Why did I choose to watch this particular anime in the midst of all the winter selection for this season? Number 1, the anime series airing for this season were pretty poor, uninteresting and overall disappointing. I mean a few of them look pretty good but most were sitting on average. Point number 2, I like planes. Okay just kidding that wasn’t the main reason (though come to think of it i am quite fond of aircraft)! What really caught my attention was the uniqueness of this anime compared to other anime for this season. It had the potential to have a great storyline, good visuals while watching and it is a spinoff from the movie The princess and the pilot (good movie to watch if you’ve got the time). These were the main culprits who forced me to watch this. Oh yeah, also did I mention I like the planes too?

The Pilot's Love Song ClaireIf action, adventure and romance were people, would they be friends? In this anime they are! I have to say (I don’t want to give the plot away though) that romance seems to be one of the big guys. We see in this first episode that romance takes up quite a bit of screenplay and i have a feeling a lot more throughout this series. ‘Twas between two persons, Kal-el, now a commoner and a shy noble, Claire Cruz. A coincidental meeting by the lake sparked love at first sight. Looks like the couple of the anime was set up quite fast. Maybe a bit too fast, but I’ll give leeway because the series contains 12 episode and I’m most certain there won’t be a second season. Action! Adventure! Yes, we mustn’t forget the other two friends! The adventure in this episode was absolute zero other but that was kind of expected rather the episode sets up the main theme of the series, The search for The End of the Sky. Sounds impossible but the world in this time is largely unknown beyond the three kingdoms. Even more interesting is they’re using a flying island as their means of transportation. Well that’s a hardcore adventure. I wish them a good voyage. As well as adventure, action is hinted a little in this episode. Don’t get disappointed though because I have a feeling that there will be plenty more action to come!

The Pilot's Love Song LandscapeThe scenery of the anime was quite nice and you may notice it is similar to the anime Last Exile in terms of art and visuals (and planes) but this series uses a more gentle and lighter selection of colour and scenery. The scenery was smooth and flowing with greenery shown in the background for the most part, which was very pleasant and calming to the eye. Don’t forget to have a quick glance at the scenery while watching.

Talk about a bad hunch for an ending. The episode ending sentence was “and so, Isla (the flying island they are on) left on a journey from which it would never return. We would yet learn how cruel the world can be.” Even so, this is in my opinion one of the most promising anime series of this winter! Stay tuned for the next episode review!
